Every year, workers at Carntyne take time out from busy operations to engage in safety talks, demonstrations and presentations with the Health and Safety Team. This year, the annual Carntyne Transport Health and Safety Day took place in June at Blackgrange covering topics such as:

  • Safety performance, trends, and common themes.
  • Working at height safely.
  • Vehicle reversing and pedestrian safety.
  • Courtesy, Dignity and Respect.

From 06:00 to 16:00 staff were given the opportunity to attend each of these workshops, all of which consisted of a short presentation followed by a Q&A. Staff were also given the chance to get inside a truck and experience what a driver sees as part of the vehicle reversing and pedestrian safety workshop.

Corin Gentles who is based at Blackgrange as the Business Unit Head of Onsite Logistics shared a bit about the day:

“This annual event has been running for 11 years now and provides us with a great platform to deliver some key health and safety topics specific to our operations, not only to our own people but the wider audience of the customer and other contractors working on site. Topics are chosen based upon our own accident trends gathered throughout the year and those which we know are high on the Health & Safety Executive agenda. This year provided a good opportunity to get up and close with an HGV to give those who don’t drive one every day an appreciation of challenges a driver will face with regards to visibility. The event has the potential to make people think twice about their daily activities and ultimately prevent an accident occurring. This can only be a good thing.”

The Health and Safety Day has previously proven successful in delivering key topics and providing additional training and this year proved no different. 150 Carntyne and Diageo employees attended and feedback from attendees has been largely positive. The day will now be taken on the road to visit satellite sites where Carntyne staff are based.

Mark Donnelly, Health and Safety Manager said, “A big thanks to all employees who attended and particularly those who helped prepare and set up this event.”
